The CISTER Research Centre (http://www.cister.isep.ipp.pt/), an internationally renowned research centre in real-time and embedded systems, invites applications for 4 PhD student positions in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Computer Science (CS), Software Engineering (SE), or Applied Mathematics (AM), to engage in an ambitious research plan in the area of Real-Time & Embedded Computing (RTES).
Embedded processors represent around 96% of all processors available worldwide, and are present in a wide variety of systems that operate in the various sectors of society. Examples include mobile devices, home appliances, as well as highly complex and safety-critical systems such as airplanes, satellites, and cars.
RTES is therefore a key research area whose results are fundamental for boosting the development of the future generation of highly complex and automated computing systems in virtually all application domains. Notable examples are aerospace and defence systems, autonomous transportation systems, Internet of Things, energy aware and green computing, smart factory automation and advanced medical devices and applications. CISTER actively participates to the development of new cutting edge technologies through major international projects such as ENABLE-S3 (on Novel Validation & Verification Procedures for Highly Automated Systems), Productive 4.0 (on the Digitalization of the European Industry) or SCOTT (on Building Trust in the Internet of Things).
The accepted candidates will engage on a highly ambitious PhD research plan, under the supervision of CISTER’s internationally renowned researchers, and will become part of an international and multi-cultural research team with a leading research track on multiple hot topics of RTES.
This research environment is boosted by strong collaborations with various world reputed academic institutions as well as with key international industrial players such as Airbus, Thales, Volvo, Renault, Toyota, Embraer, Honeywell, Siemens, Philips, IBM, Critical Software, TTTech, AVL, EFACEC, GMV or Bosch.
CISTER and the City of Porto will also be at the centre of the Cyber-Physical Systems world in 2018, with the organization of the CPSWeek 2018 (www.cpsweek.org).
The accepted candidates will be hosted by CISTER and will enrol in one of the PhD programs offered by its academic partnerships: the PhD Program offered by the University of Porto on ECE (PDEEC program) or on CS/SE (PRODEI program), or the PhD Program offered by the MAP-i initiative (CS/SE) lead by the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto. Highly performing students may be given the opportunity to engage in a Dual PhD Program with the Carnegie Mellon University. More details on these programs can be found at www.cister.isep.ipp.pt/phd/
CANDITATES’ PROFILE
CISTER is looking for highly motivated candidates with a Master degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Computer Science (CS), Software Engineering (SE), Applied Mathematics (AM) or related areas, with an excellent academic record. Candidates with a solid industrial CV that wish to pursue a PhD degree, are also encouraged to apply. Excellent communication skills in English is considered essential and applicants are expected to have command of both spoken and written English.
WHAT CISTER OFFERS
Research grants are provided for up to four years, with a salary ranging from 12.000,00€ up to 14.000,00€ (after taxes) per year, and with tuition costs covered by CISTER. CISTER is housed in a self-contained modern facility with over 2000m2, with labs fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
